Exclude 7-Zip Temporary Working Directories

This guide explains how to identify, standardize, and configure exclusion rules for 7-Zip temporary working directories in antivirus, backup, and indexing tools. Configuring these exclusions prevents active security scans from locking temporary archive files, significantly speeding up large compression and extraction tasks while reducing disk thrashing.

Step 1: Assign a Static Working Folder in 7-Zip

By default, 7-Zip uses the default Windows user temporary directory (%TEMP%), where it generates randomly named subfolders (such as 7zE*.tmp). Because excluding the entire Windows %TEMP% folder creates security vulnerabilities, you should first assign a dedicated, static directory for 7-Zip operations.

  1. Open 7-Zip File Manager.
  2. Click Tools in the top menu and select Options.
  3. Navigate to the Folders tab.
  4. Under the Working folder section, select Specified.
  5. Click the browse button (...) and choose or create a dedicated path (for example, C:\7ZipTemp).
  6. Click Apply, then OK.

Step 2: Add Folder Exclusions to Windows Security

Once your static directory is established, add it to your antivirus exclusion list. If you use Microsoft Defender Antivirus, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows Key, type Windows Security, and open the application.
  2. Go to Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
  4. Scroll down to the Exclusions section and click Add or remove exclusions.
  5. Click Add an exclusion and choose Folder.
  6. Select the static directory you configured in Step 1 (e.g., C:\7ZipTemp).

(Note: For third-party antivirus suites like Bitdefender, Norton, or Kaspersky, locate the "Real-Time Protection" or "Antivirus Exceptions" settings and add the same directory.)

Step 3: Add Process Exclusions (Optional)

If performance bottlenecks persist during high-volume compression or extraction, you can exclude the 7-Zip executables from real-time inspection.

  1. In your security software's Exclusions menu, click Add an exclusion and choose Process.
  2. Enter the process name 7zFM.exe (7-Zip File Manager GUI).
  3. Repeat the step and enter 7z.exe (7-Zip Command Line executable).
  4. Repeat if necessary for 7zG.exe (7-Zip GUI module).

Step 4: Exclude the Folder from Backup and Indexing Services

Temporary archive data does not need to be indexed or backed up.

  • Windows Search Indexing:
    1. Open the Start menu, type Indexing Options, and press Enter.
    2. Click Modify, uncheck your dedicated 7-Zip temp folder (C:\7ZipTemp), and click OK.
  • Backup Software:
    1. Open your backup tool’s file-selection settings.
    2. Add C:\7ZipTemp\* to the exclusion/filter list to avoid backing up short-lived scratch files.
