Does 7-Zip Support Drag and Drop?
7-Zip technically supports drag-and-drop operations between external application windows such as Windows Explorer, but it does so with significant limitations. While dragging files into 7-Zip from external applications works smoothly, dragging files out of 7-Zip to external folders relies on an inefficient temporary caching process rather than direct extraction.
Dragging Files into 7-Zip
Dragging files or folders from an external window (like File Explorer) into the 7-Zip File Manager works as expected. 7-Zip accepts the dropped data and opens an "Add to Archive" dialog, allowing you to compress the incoming files directly into the target archive without unnecessary overhead.
Dragging Files Out of 7-Zip (The Temp Folder Bottleneck)
When you drag a file out of the 7-Zip File Manager and drop it into Windows Explorer or another external program, 7-Zip does not extract the file directly to your target directory. Instead, the process works in two separate stages:
- Extraction to Temp: 7-Zip extracts the selected
contents into the Windows temporary folder (
%TEMP%). - Move to Target: Once extraction is complete, Windows Explorer moves the files from the temporary directory to the folder where you released the mouse cursor.
This behavior causes several practical problems:
- Performance Lag: Large archives must be read and written twice, drastically increasing extraction time.
- Disk Space Constraints: If your primary drive
(
C:) lacks sufficient free space to hold the uncompressed files, the operation will fail even if the destination drive has plenty of space. - SSD Wear: Heavy disk writes to your system drive reduce storage lifespan and waste system resources.
Drag-and-Drop Between 7-Zip Windows
If you open two separate 7-Zip File Manager windows and drag items between them, 7-Zip handles the operation internally. This bypasses Windows Explorer and handles the transfer directly, avoiding the intermediate temporary directory limitation.
Recommended Alternatives to Drag-and-Drop
To bypass the performance penalty of 7-Zip’s drag-and-drop mechanism when working with external windows:
- Use the "Extract" Button: Select the files inside 7-Zip, click the blue Extract button on the toolbar, and specify the destination path directly.
- Use the Context Menu: Instead of opening the archive, right-click the archive file in File Explorer and select 7-Zip > Extract to... to write files straight to the destination disk.
