7-Zip ZStandard Fork vs Official 7-Zip Features
The 7-Zip ZStandard (7-Zip-zstd) fork enhances the official, upstream 7-Zip archiver by embedding several modern, high-performance compression algorithms directly into the software. While official releases focus primarily on established algorithms like LZMA, LZMA2, and Deflate, the ZStandard fork serves as a drop-in replacement that enables users to compress and decompress data using fast, cutting-edge codecs such as Zstandard, Brotli, and LZ4, significantly reducing processing times without sacrificing compression ratios.
Extended Codec Support
The primary enhancement of the 7-Zip ZStandard edition is the inclusion of alternative compression codecs directly in the 7z format container and individual file streams:
- Zstandard (Zstd): Developed by Meta, Zstd provides compression ratios comparable to Deflate/Zip while operating at dramatically faster speeds, particularly during decompression.
- Brotli: Created by Google, Brotli is optimized for text, HTML, and web assets, often delivering better compression ratios than traditional Deflate and bzip2.
- LZ4: An extremely fast lossless compression algorithm capable of operating at hundreds of megabytes per second per core, ideal for scenarios where speed is prioritized over archive size.
- Lizard: Formerly known as LZ5, this algorithm targets high decompression speeds with an efficient trade-off between ratio and resource usage.
Fast LZMA2 Implementation
In addition to alternative codecs, the fork integrates Fast
LZMA2 (FLZMA2). Standard LZMA2 in official 7-Zip divides
workloads across CPU threads, but its scaling can plateau on modern
processors with high core counts. Fast LZMA2 optimizes multi-threading,
allowing standard .7z archives to compress 20% to 100%
faster on modern multi-core systems while maintaining identical
decompression compatibility with standard 7-Zip installations.
Seamless Drop-In Replacement
The 7-Zip ZStandard fork is structured to replace vanilla 7-Zip directly:
- Identical Interface: Both the graphical user
interface (GUI) and command-line interface (
7z.exe) retain the standard layout, context menu entries, and syntax, with extra parameters added for new algorithms. - Archive Portability: Standard LZMA/LZMA2 archives created with this fork open normally in official 7-Zip builds. However, archives packaged with Zstd, Brotli, or LZ4 require the ZStandard fork or another compatible decompressor to unpack.
- Upstream Parity: The project regularly pulls updates and security patches from Igor Pavlov's official 7-Zip source tree, ensuring security parity alongside its feature expansions.
