7-Zip Progress Bar and Remaining Time Indicator
When compressing or extracting archives in 7-Zip, the primary indicator that displays the progress percentage and remaining time is the Progress Dialog window. This dedicated status window launches automatically whenever an operation begins, providing real-time data on the task's completion rate, elapsed duration, estimated time left, and current processing speed.
The 7-Zip Progress Dialog
The Progress Dialog is the central interface for monitoring active tasks. It contains several specific metrics:
- Progress Bar and Percentage: A graphical progress bar fills from left to right across the window, accompanied by a precise numerical percentage (0% to 100%) indicating how much of the total archive data has been processed.
- Elapsed Time: Located on the left side of the window, this counter tracks the exact hours, minutes, and seconds that have passed since the operation started.
- Remaining Time: Displayed next to the elapsed time, this field estimates the time left before the operation finishes. 7-Zip calculates this value dynamically based on the current read/write speeds and the remaining data volume.
- Processed Size / Total Size: Shows the amount of data processed so far alongside the total uncompressed or compressed file size.
- Speed: Displays the current throughput rate in megabytes per second (MB/s).
- Files Count: Shows the number of individual files and folders processed relative to the total.
Windows Taskbar Integration
In addition to the main dialog window, 7-Zip integrates with the Windows taskbar:
- Taskbar Progress Bar: The 7-Zip icon on the Windows taskbar fills with a green progress overlay to reflect the overall completion percentage.
- Window Title: Hovering over or checking the taskbar entry shows the current percentage directly in the window title.
Command-Line (CLI) Progress Indicator
If 7-Zip is run via the command line (7z.exe), the
progress is shown directly in the terminal:
- A live text-based percentage ticker updates in the console.
- Depending on the command options used (such as
-bsp1), 7-Zip outputs the current percentage, processed bytes, and total file count directly to the standard output stream.
